If you're looking for a true SMP experience, Despawn is the only place. We've modded our server to fix the biggest issues plaguing SMP, like per-player memories, per-player teleporters and achievements, and anti-grief land protection. We even have teams that let you share teleporters, land protection, and TP to each other!
When you hop into Despawn, you'll drop into a random safe spot in the world with a basic starter kit consisting of a crude sword and a few pieces of food to get you started/fend off any early mobs that might be in your area.
